1. One pack of cotton swabs; 2. One roll of breathable adhesive tape; 3. One plastic bag;
4. Bedpan; 5. Normal saline solution or boiled water;
6. Iodine disinfectant solution (if needed).
Place the bedpan under the patient's buttocks.
Separate the labia or retract the foreskin by hand.
Moisten a cotton swab with normal saline solution or boiled water and clean about one inch (2.5 cm) of the catheter near the catheter tip. Use one cotton swab each time, and discard the soiled swab into the prepared plastic bag.
Check for any crusts, abnormal drainage, or discharge. If present, inform the healthcare staff.
Secure the catheter to the inner thigh (female patients) or lower abdomen (male patients) using breathable adhesive tape in a crisscross pattern. Change the tape application site daily to prevent prolonged adhesion or catheter compression that could cause skin damage.
