Silicone catheters are widely used in clinical medicine, primarily for cases of difficulty urinating, urinary retention, or postoperative catheterization. Temporary catheterization is suitable for patients with acute urinary retention. Under aseptic conditions, the catheter is inserted through the urethra into the bladder to help quickly drain urine; catheterization time typically does not exceed 24 hours. Indwelling catheterization is used for patients with long-term urinary disorders, such as neurogenic bladder or advanced benign prostatic hyperplasia. A silicone catheter with a balloon is used to secure it in the bladder, requiring daily cleaning of the urethral opening and regular changing of the urine collection bag.
Bladder irrigation involves injecting medications such as saline or antibiotic solutions into the bladder through a catheter to treat cystitis or prevent blood clot blockage. The procedure requires low-pressure, slow irrigation and strict aseptic technique. Urethral dilation is used for patients with urethral stricture, gradually increasing the catheter diameter to improve urination; this must be performed by a qualified physician. Postoperative drainage is common after urological surgery. A catheter is used to monitor urine output and reduce bladder pressure; the drainage system must be kept closed. Silicone catheters have a smooth surface, good biocompatibility, and low irritation to the urethral mucosa, making them suitable for long-term indwelling catheterization.
