1. Emptying the Drainage Bag: Emptying the urine bag is crucial for urination. Use the drain valve at the bottom of the bag, usually an outlet that can be twisted or pulled open. Before emptying, prepare a dedicated clean container to collect the urine. Open the drain valve gently, allowing the urine to flow naturally into the container. Avoid squeezing the bag forcefully to prevent reflux and urinary tract infections.
2. Maintaining Cleanliness: Maintaining cleanliness throughout the urination process is essential for preventing infection. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and running water before and after handling the drain valve. When emptying the bag, ensure the drain valve opening does not touch the inside of the container or other potentially contaminated items.
3. Proper Securing: Properly securing the urine bag is fundamental to ensuring its proper function and patient comfort. The bag should always be positioned below the bladder level, using gravity to promote urine drainage and prevent urine retention or reflux. A special leg strap or waist belt can be used to secure the urine bag to the outside of the thigh or calf. The tightness of the strap should be appropriate, allowing one finger to be inserted.
